One of the most useful ways to look at self-awareness is to consider the differences between who you are and how you think you’re different.
I know, I know. Self-awareness is a very technical term to define, so let’s simplify it a bit by looking at who we are as human beings in general.
Being human is a very broad term. I’m not saying that every human being can be fully self-aware. But in most people’s minds, they feel that they are. In fact, the ability to be fully self-aware is one of the most fundamental human skills. It’s something that most people do not have a problem with.
Self-awareness is the ability to be aware of one’s own thoughts, feelings, desires, and habits. In the words of the great economist and philosopher Frederic Bastiat, “A man who is free does not think, and a man who is captive does not feel.” While we often think of ourselves as being free and autonomous, the reality is we are not.
The fact is we have to be self-aware every day. The day we are born, we are born with a mind that has the potential of thinking, feeling, and acting in a way that is completely unique. Self-awareness means we are able to recognize our own thoughts, feelings, and habits and have the ability to adjust our behavior accordingly. Self-awareness is not a simple skill to learn.
Self-awareness is a process, and it happens automatically and naturally in the first few moments after we are born. But it is not an easy thing to do in the beginning. In the beginning, we have no idea what we are doing, what our actions are going to do, and how our actions may affect others, so we are still completely unaware of how those actions may impact others.
This is why it is so important for us to learn to recognize when we are on autopilot. If we can remind ourselves of what we are doing and what we are feeling, then we will have the ability to control our feelings and habits and thus change our behavior if we are in the wrong. Otherwise, we might just make the same mistakes again.
Asking “what are you going to do?” is easy. However, it is not always helpful. We need to first ask “what are you going to think?” before we can answer. When we ask “what are you going to do?” we give the impression that we are not really thinking, that we are just reacting.
The difference between “what are you going to do” and “what are you going to think” is, well, the difference between “I will think of something.” and “I will do something.” We can’t think of something if we still haven’t had a thought, so we can’t actually say “I will think of something” until the thought has actually formed.
If we think a thought, we think something. If we do something, we do something. Like when we say I will think of something, we are only talking about the thought, and in that moment we have a thought. We did not say I am going to think of something, we said I am going to do something. So what our saying is, “I am going to think of something,” we are only saying our thought is going to form.
